The city of Los Angeles and LA 2024 will 'Follow the Sun' at the Rose Parade

(SFC) The 128th Rose Parade is set to take place on January 2, 2017, and it will feature the City of Los Angeles' (LA) flower-studded float. The float will have top Olympians and Paralympians riding along celebrating the city's bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"On behalf of LA 2024, we are honored to participate in the City of Los Angeles' float for the 128th Rose Parade. The Rose Parade is the perfect stage to show the world our city's enthusiasm and passion for the Olympic Movement. Our 'Follow the Sun' float reflects the City of Angels' optimism, innovation and creativity that LA 2024 intends to harness to deliver a New Games for a new era," expressed LA 2024 Chairman, Casey Wasserman.

LA's "Follow the Sun" float was created by LA 2024 and the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (L.A. Tourism). The city's iconic venues will be showcased and the float will feature Olympic and Paralympic legends including April Ross, Bart Conner, Lex Gillette, and Nadia Comaneci. Also, young Angeleno athletes with the LA84 Foundation will represent LA's commitment to healthy living and sport.

Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board Chief Marketing Officer, Don Skeoch stated, "From our world-class venues, natural beauty and endless sunshine, the City of L.A. float in the 128th Rose Parade brings to life the myriad treasures that make Los Angeles a premier vacation destination and the ideal city to host the greatest global sports event in 2024.The destination continues to mesmerize more than 45 million annual visitors with only-in-L.A experiences."

Renowned Fiesta Parade Floats designed the float, which will be comprised of over 20,000 total roses, carnations, and mums. It will also be made up of natural materials including moss, rice, and seeds. The front of the float will have the LA Memorial Coliseum standing tall with a flame burning in its cauldron. High above the Coliseum's famed peristyle is LA's new Olympic logo and is framed by stylized sculptures of palm trees. A Bird of Paradise, the official flower of the city, flower arrangement flanks the Coliseum. At the center will be beach volleyball live game, which will be surrounded by crystalline crashing waves using floral illustrations. Lastly, a magnificent, larger-than-life sculpture of the sun will be at the rear of the float.

In addition, the current lineup of athlete participants features Candace Cable, Holly McPeak, Rudy Garcia Tolson, Sinjin Smith, Howard Shu, and Dawn Harper-Nelson. Keeping with this, LA 2024 Athletes' Commission members and Olympic Champions, Janet Evans, Allyson Felix, and Greg Louganis will be Grand Marshals of the Tournament of Roses.

This year's float marks the city's 119th consecutive year collaborating with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. This makes it one of the longest-running entries.
