(SFC) Los Angeles (LA) 2024 Bid Committee received some good
news as LA county voters approved $120 billion for new rail lines, bus
services, and highway improvements. These funds will be added to LA's $88
million mass transit overhaul. This is a huge boost to LA 2024's commitment to
delivering a convenient and fast transport.
Measure M surpassed the 2/3 vote threshold required as it
received 69.8% of votes cast. The ballot
campaign was led by LA Mayor, Eric Garcetti and included various community,
labor, and business leaders.
Mayor Garcetti stated, "Seventy percent of this county
said we are sick and tired of traffic and we're going to do something about it.
The car capital of the world will soon be home to a transit system that is the
envy of the world."
This will now allow for the Metro's Purple Line subway
westward route to be expedited. The route will connect Downtown LA to the home
of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Westwood. UCLA is the
proposed location for the Olympic Village at LA 2024. Also, the new funds will
go towards the completion of the Metro rail station at LAX, which will allow
passengers to access LA's transit system and all four Sports Parks for the 2024
Games.
In addition, funding will be allocated for highway maintenance,
local street repair, pedestrian improvements, new bicycle lanes, and carpool
lanes. All these transport infrastructure upgrades are planned and funded separately
from LA 2024.
These improvements will make LA 2024 a well-connected Games
experience for everyone. The 11 sports venues within the Downtown Sports Park's
single secure area for LA 2024 and Olympic Family hotels will be connected by
shuttle services and pedestrian zones. The new metro services and designated
high occupancy vehicle lanes will make both Santa Monica Beach and the Olympic
Village 25-minute travel times. Santa Monica Beach is the proposed site for the
2024 Olympic Beach Volleyball events.
"On behalf of LA 2024, we welcome the approval of Measure M
as a great boost to LA 2024's low-risk, sustainable and innovative vision for
the Games that fits with our city's ongoing transformation and investment in
its future. With the largest construction program in the US already underway,
Angelenos are always imagining 'what's next,' and that extends to reducing
traffic and defining the future of mobility. Should the IOC elect LA as host
city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, athletes, fans, and all other
attendees can expect well-connected, smooth, and fast transit that allows the
world's focus to be entirely on the great achievements of the best athletes on
the planet, and on the inspirational values of the Olympic and Paralympic
Movement," expressed LA 2024 Chairman, Casey Wasserman.
LA 2024 will be a connected Games experience as all Sports
Parks and the city's new transit system will be connected, making travel fast, convenient,
and easy for everyone.
