Paris 2024 aids in 'Year of Olympism' launch in schools across France

(SFC) The 'Year of Olympism' has been launched to celebrate the annual National Day of Sport in France and the one year to go mark of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Host City decision. Athletes and school children gathered to celebrate the initiative, which will be activated in all educational institutions in France.

The French Ministry of Education and the French National Olympic Committee (NOC) partnered with Paris 2024 to launch the unique project. The project also supports Paris 2024's ambitious plans to return Olympism to the heart of the city and lives of its citizens.

"Via a Paris 2024 Games, we have a unique opportunity to return Olympism to the heart of Paris and France and make it central to the lives of our citizens - reflecting a key goal of Agenda 2020. As we celebrate one year to go to the Host City decision in Lima, this fantastic initiative that will enable young people to learn more about Olympic history and play more school sport works in perfect harmony with this goal and the strategy that underpins our bid," expressed Paris 2024 Co-Chairman and triple Olympic Champion, Tony Estanguet,

The launching event took place in Paris at the French NOC headquarters and was carried out by the NOC President, Denis Masseglia; Minister of Education, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem; Secretary of State for Sport, Thierry Braillard; and Minister for Urban Affairs, Youth and Sport, Patrick Kanner. The program's official Athlete Ambassador Rio 2016 Modern Pentathlon silver medalist, Elodie Clouvel was present. He was joined by Rio 2016 Rowing gold medalist, Pierre Houin; Rio 2016 Boxing silver medalist, Sarah Ourahmoune; Rio 2016 Rugby Sevens Olympian, Terry Bouhraoua; Rio 2016 Handball Olympian, Blandine Dancette; and Rio 2016 Modern Pentathlon Olympian, Valentin Belaud.

"I am delighted to be involved in this fantastic initiative that will help to spread the values of Olympism throughout all educational institutions across France," commented 'Year of Olympism' Ambassador, Clouvel.

Paris 2024 Co-Chairman Estanguet was in attendance to represent Paris 2024. Also taking part in the launch event was 200 school children, they also participated in a consultation meeting with athletes and political and sports leaders.

The 'Year of Olympism' will be activated across the upcoming school year. It will focus on sharing the values and awareness of Olympism, along with driving up sports participation among young people. Fun activities will be included for younger age groups as well as educational tools pertaining to the Paris 2024 bid and the history of Olympism and the Olympics.

Paris 2024 Co-Chairman, Bernard Lapasset stated, "Paris and France has Olympism in its DNA and we are committed to sharing further the spirit of Olympism in the city where Pierre de Coubertin first imagined a better world through sport. Paris is a dynamic and cosmopolitan city with a famous heritage rooted in Olympism - it is important that young people are taught about this heritage to ensure that it lives on and thrives in our society."
