Olympics: Paris 2024 bid congratulates Paris Mayor on election as Chair of C40 Cities Group

(SFC) Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo received congratulations from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid Committee for being elected as the Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40). She will replace the incumbent Chair, Eduardo Paes, the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro. He has served as Chair since December of 2013.

The C40 Group is made up of a vast network of 85 of the largest cities around the world. It represents 650 million economies and people, which makes up 25% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). They offer a forum for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and serve as a driving force for sustainable action on urban and climate change programs.

"On behalf of Paris 2024, I would like to congratulate Mayor Hidalgo on her election as Chair of C40. This is a very important position and it's vital that the world's global cities come together to lead good practice in green initiatives and sustainability," expressed Paris 2024 Co-Chairman and International Olympic Committee Sustainability and Legacy Committee Member, Tony Estanguet.

For two years, Mayor Hidalgo will serve as Chair with an opportunity to fulfill a third and final year. This election reaffirms Paris' position as a world leader in environmental programs and gives the Paris a boost in the heated race for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Mayor Hidalgo stated, "It is with great pleasure that I accept the responsibility that is being handed over to me today. Becoming C40's new chair is an honor and a privilege. The potential of C40 is huge - whether it's climate change, social inclusion or welcoming refugees, our cities are at the forefront of many challenges and need - more than ever - to work together."

Furthermore, Mayor Hidalgo's election proves Paris 2024's commitment to fighting climate change and providing a truly sustainable Games. Moreover, Paris 2024 has already launched an Environmental Excellence Committee and it's making noteworthy contributions to the development Paris' bid. The Bid Committee has also partnered with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to ensure that the best sustainability practices are implemented in their Games plan.

Estanguet concluded, "Sustainability has been at the heart of the Paris 2024 bid since the very beginning and we are totally committed to delivering a spectacular Games that leaves a sustainable and green legacy for Paris and France. The election of Mayor Hidalgo reaffirms Paris' status as a global leader in sustainable initiatives.
