2024 bid cities celebrate 122nd Olympic Day Anniversary

(SFC) The 2024 cities were making the most of Olympic Day celebrations around the world to mark the launch of the Modern Olympic Movement June 23, 1894 in Paris at the Sorbonne University. This marked 122 years of the relaunch of the Games and it is staggering the impact of the Olympic Brand around the world.

Budapest 2024

Budapest 2024 bid organized a suggestive sunset run to commemorate the event and even shortened the length of the distance to 2024 meters to emphasize the bid should they win the Summer Games.  The city was full of lights as over 3,000 runners joined the race along the Danube River encouraged on by cheering fans. After the race commemorative medals we given out as a souvenir of the Olympic Day Run.

Many youth activities were organized by the bid team that took place in Budapest, Debrecen and Gyor. The atmosphere was further buoyed by the tie with Portugal at the Euros taking them to the next level.

Los Angeles 2024

The Los Angeles 2024 bid and the LA84 Foundation hosted 500 local youths at the LA Memorial Coliseum for a day of sports and recreation. The US Olympic Committee counted a number of events across the country with a record-setting 2,120 scheduled events in 1,503 communities, engaging nearly 900,000 Americans in celebration of the Olympic Movement.  

The event at the Coliseum was sponsored by Nike and the Foundation for Global Sports Development and gave the young athletes the  opportunity to rotate through nine Olympic and Paralympic sport stations, led by LA84 Foundation grantee programs, local sport and adaptive programs.

LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, commented on the day, "The Olympics are in LA's DNA - 88% of Angelenos support bringing the Games back to the City of Angels in 2024. As a city and as the committee working to bring back the Games to the US for the first time in 28 years, we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to host the US flagship celebration of the Olympic Movement at the iconic LA Memorial Coliseum. Today was not only a tremendous display of the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence, but also a testament to the passion we as Angelenos have for sport and for the Olympic Movement." 

Paris 2024

The Paris 2024 bid held a symbolic anniversary with the team reuniting in the  Salle Greard at the Sorbonne University in central Paris where Baron Pierre de Coubertin ‎founded the IOC on 23rd June 1894. The meeting also marked one year since the launch of the bid to host the Games.

During the day numerous activities throughout the host city and Saint-Denis were staged engaging thousands of youths to rally to the Olympic Spirit and get active.

Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, said, "The ambition and drive of Paris is encapsulated by our enthusiasm for sport and today's Olympic Day celebrations underline the deep-rooted passion, particularly for Olympic sport, across the city. The Sorbonne is a symbol of youth and education and it's great to celebrate Olympic history and values, while also looking to the future of the Movement. The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a unique opportunity to place sport even more firmly at the heart of our city and to utilize the values of Olympism to contribute to the education of young people."

Rome 2024

The Rome 2024 bid didn't promote any special activities in the Eternal City however all eyes are on the recently elected new Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, who has spoken out against the bid. At this point Italian media reports that Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee, awaits a meeting with Raggi to discuss the government support of the bid.
