(SFC) The Rome 2024 Olympic bid announced today that the Italian Parliament threw its weight behind the Olympic project by a large majority with a clear and indisputable position.

According to Dire press agency, the Chamber of Deputies rejected with 288 votes against and 114 in favor of the motion presented by deputy and candidate for mayor of Rome Si-Sel, Stefano Fassina, asking for a referendum on the candidature.

Parliamentary support compounds the passionate backing by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and gives to the city and the country an important opportunity for an economic boost and the revival of its international image.

The bid said in a statement: "We have the chance to show the world that Italy knows how to achieve its goals and is able, as happened with the 1960 Summer Olympics and more recently with Expo, to host highly successful events in total transparency.

The Parliament's vote, is an act of responsibility for the future of the country, that wants to seize major challenges and is confident of achieving  them with great effort and, above all, keeping in mind the new generations."

Rome is bidding against Paris, Budapest and Los Angeles to host the summer Olympics and the IOC will vote its final decision in Lima Peru in September of 2017.

The Eternal City hosted the 1960 Olympics and intends to utilize a number of existing venues from those Games. The 60th anniversary of the Cortina winter Games was just held in the alpine city fanning the enthusiasm to bring the Games back to Italy ten years from the staging of the Turin winter Olympics in 2006.
