(SFC) German citizens will decide the fate today of the Hamburg 2024 Olympic bid as public polling stations opened in the cities of Hamburg and Kiel. Since early November voters could cast their absentee ballots but today's public referendum makes the final choice.

A provisional result is expected to be made public by around 22:00 local time.

Hamburg is bidding to host the summer Games with Kiel selected as the potential sailing venue. The German city is running against stiff competition from four wold class destinations: Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome.

The bid needs the support of 1.3 million eligible voters in Hamburg and almost 200,000 in Kiel. A majority of the votes is required in Hamburg as well as approval by at least 20 percent of the city's eligible voters.
