(SFC)  The European Olympic Committees (EOC) wound up 2015 with the annual general assembly taking place in Prague, Czech Republic and President Patrick Hickey hailed 2015 as "an historic year for sport in Europe."

This year's assembly gathered over 350 delegates including IOC President Thomas Bach, ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, IOC members, IOC staff and stakeholders from International and European Sports Federations, organizing committees of the upcoming Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, cities bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Games, and other key sports organizations, as well as members of the media.

"We are honored that Prague is hosting the European Olympic family once again and the Czech Olympic Committee has done a terrific job in organizing our General Assembly this year," said EOC President Patrick Hickey. "It was a busy first day with many updates, presentations, and reflection on an historic year for sport in Europe.

"This is of course the year which we, finally, introduced a continental Games for Europe - and showed what a successful product it is. But we have been busy in many other fields as well, and it is only when we bring ourselves together that we can fully take stock of the great work being done within sport and society by the European Olympic family."

The situation about the host city for the 2019 European Games was clarified and Patrick Hickey noted, "Russia is still the EOC's preferred partner for hosting the 2019 European Games. That is provided the independent authorities can confirm Russia's ability to support an anti-doping program that meets the highest international standards."

The first day of meetings concluded with a Gala Dinner hosted at Prague Castle, the seat of the head of state of the Czech Republic. The EOC 2015 Piotr Nurowski Prize for the Best Young European Athlete took place, with 18-year-old Czech cyclist Jiří Janošek, winning first prize.
