(SFC) The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) announced today that Hyungkoo Yeo has been named the new Secretary General of the Games.

Yeo comes from a long background spanning 35 years in public service and left his position as the 2nd vice minister of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to join POCOG. He wasted no time and jumped right in attending a weekly staff meeting Monday morning in Seoul that was led by POCOG President Yang-ho Cho.

"It is a great honor to be appointed as Secretary General. Personally however, I feel a greater responsibility than joy for the honor since there is a lot of work to be done in order to successfully host the Games in 2018," exclaimed Yeo as he took up his new post.

"The goal of POCOG is to stage successful Games for the world, and therefore all staff members must do their best in order to achieve that goal," he emphasized. "I will also endeavor to work to enhance national competitiveness and improve Korea's performance.

"We are only 2 years away from the opening of the Games, and there are 3 months left to the start of the first test event which will serve as the cornerstone of success in 2018. Throughout my 35-years of public service, I've always believed that the answers emerge on the spot, and I will also do the same for PyeongChang 2018."

He will be in charge of all Games-related facilities including competition venues, the Olympic Stadium for Opening & Closing Ceremonies and Olympic villages and must make sure that the venues will be constructed in time to host the test events next February.

Yeo will oversee all Games related preparations under POCOG President Cho and namely marketing, accommodations, transport and the promotion of the Games to the public.

The first thing he will do is travel to PyeongChang and Gangneung for 2 days to take a tour of the construction sites for the competition venues and gather information on the progress.
