Record crowds celebrate Bastille Day and show support for Paris 2024

(SFC) This week, the President of France, the Mayor of Paris, and Paris 2024 Bid leaders were joined by over 100 athletes and hundreds of thousands of spectators who came together on the Champ de Mars and its surrounding areas in Paris  to celebrate Bastille Day.  

The record crowds gathered together to watch a spectacular firework display and celebrated the event themed, "Paris welcomes the world." The firework display kicked off with a real memorable message of support for Paris' bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

In addition, the public was given glowing bracelets (around 160,000), which created a beautiful light show, and it sent out an inspiring message of unity on French national day. The event was broadcasted live by France 2 to three million viewers. The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo shared the firework show by broadcasting it live on Periscope to social media users all over the globe.  

Over 150,000 photos, comments, and tweets were shared all over the social networking sites. This included 50,000 tweets that used the hashtag #14juillet. Facebook posts about the firework display generated more than 100,000 'likes' and over 100,000 photos of the fireworks were posted on Instagram.

"Paris is a dynamic and diverse city and it's wonderful to see record crowds coming together to celebrate Bastille Day with such vigor and passion. We will harness this energy as we continue in our bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and we are confident that together we can create a bid that will be infused with the same vitality and dynamism for Paris and the whole of France," expressed Mayor Hidalgo.

Chairman of Paris 2024, Bernard Lapasset stated, "The record-breaking Bastille Day festivities were a fantastic celebration of the pride and unity that embodies the people of Paris and France. These are the unique values that we will draw on as we piece together our bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games."

Lapasset added, "We are delighted with the broad support of our political stakeholders and the firm commitment offered by the President, François Hollande, the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and our wonderful athletes."

At the end, the City of Paris thanked all their partners who made the event possible, including Radio France, Electron Libre Productions, and France Télévisions. The city also commended the efforts by Groupe F pyrotechnicians, who launched the fireworks from the Eiffel Tower.
