(SFC) The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed in a statement that a special mourning place will be set up at the Rio 2016 Olympic Village giving athletes the opportunity to mourn those who have passed away "in a special and dignified way".

The place will allow not only athletes access but also anyone in the Olympic Village.

The Executive Board will also commemorate the place with a special ceremony remembering those who have lost their lives at the Olympic Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach said, "We want to give the athletes and others in the Olympic Village the opportunity to express their mourning in a dignified way and in an environment where representatives of the whole world are living together peacefully under the same roof.

"The moment of reflection in the Closing Ceremony should act as a reminder that this is an important and solemn Olympic moment, but that life is about more," he added.

The IOC also decided to commemorate a moment during the Closing Ceremony of the Games to those that have passed. That will extend to everyone in the stadium as well as TV viewers as a reminder.
