IOC recognizes Kosovo and picks Lima for 2017 IOC Session

(SFC) Following the landslide approval yesterday of the Olympic Agenda 2020 Recommendations the International Olympic Committee (IOC) welcomed the National Olympic Committee of Kosovo with full recognition.

The NOC of Kosovo was set up in 1992 and counts more than 30 national sports federations of which 13 are Olympic sports federations and eight are already full members of their affiliated international federations so the organization is well on its way to start participating at future Games.

Kosovo will now be able to prepare to take a team to Rio 2016.

2017 IOC Session

Lima, Peru won the nod to host the 130th IOC Session beating Helsinki, Finland 54 to 30 votes. This session will be the time and place for the 2024 Summer Olympics vote.

IOC Member Extension

According to the proposal of the IOC Executive Board, the IOC membership of Gian-Franco Kasper was extended until the end of his term of presidency at the International Ski Federation (FIS) in June 2018.

They were able to use Recommendation 37 which allows for the extention: “The IOC Session, upon the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board, may decide a one-time extension of an IOC member’s term of office for a maximum of four years, beyond the current age limit of 70.”

Kasper is also the President of the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), was set to retire from the IOC due to the age limit at midnight on 31 December.
