(SFC) The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) formally approved the bid deadlines and process guidelines for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games bidding process.

The IOC is looking to create a fresh approach to their future of Olympic bids after what happened with the 2022 winter Games field with a number of cities falling out due to a lack of government and public support leaving only Beijing, China and Almaty, Kazakhstan in a two horse race. And they are generating a good deal of excitement as cities from the USA, France, Italy, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and more have expressed an interest in joining the race.

The IOC Members will vote on the 40 recommendations 8 and 9 December and one of them is to launch an ‘invitation phase’. IOC would invite cities interested in hosting the Games, through their NOCs, to engage in a dialogue to learn how they think the Olympic Games could best fit into their long-term social, economic, environmental, and sports planning. This is yet to be voted into effect.

But the actual phases have been confirmed and the 2024 campaign will kick off with the Applicant city phase for cities on 15 September 2015 and continue through to April/May 2016. Then the Candidate City Phase starts in August 2016 and will continue through to the election of the host city in the summer of 2017.
