(SFC) The prestigious Golden Foot Legends Awards today announced that American football great and double Olympic gold medal winner Mia Hamm became the first woman ever to have her footprint on the Champion’s Promenade in Monte-Carlo.

There were a total of six football legends who joined the famous footprint club that displays their feet images in brass on the seaside walkway at the Grimaldi Forum. Hamm was alongside Hidetoshi Nakata, Antonin Panenka, Hakan Sukur, Roger Milla, and Jean-Marie Pfaff.

Hamm said, “I am very honored to be here, very humbled to be in the presence of such distinguished and accomplished footballers both present and from the past, and obviously to be the first female footballer to be asked to leave their footprints on the promenade.

“I hope that I am the first of many more to come. There are some wonderful players that have retired and some playing today that are inspiring girls all over this world.

The Golden Foot – Champions Promenade was created in 2003 and HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco decided to dedicate part of the Principality’s waterfront to the greatest footballers in history and to have them leave their footprints there forever as an open-air museum.

The celebrations will follow with the footprints ceremony on Saturday at the Monte-Carlo Bay and then the Golden Foot Award 2014 on Monday at a special red carpet Gala dinner at the Monte-Carlo Sporting.
