(SFC) The 13th SportAccord Convention will be held in Sochi, Russia, in April or May 2015, SportAccord President Marcus Vizer announced in Lausanne, Switzerland, Tuesday.

The decision to return to Sochi comes just about one week after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down last Thursday near the border with Russia and today two Ukrainian military jets were shot down as well. The US Department of state issued travel warnings Tuesday as well advising citizens not to travel to the region.

However, SportAccord's new director of communications, John Hewitt pointed out to SportsFeatures.com that sports and politics need to be two separate entities. Hewitt replaces longtime media specialist Jay Stuart who has stepped down.

“It is a pleasure to inform the sport community that the Convention will be organised in Sochi,” Vizer said. “A city that demonstrated its passion for sport and capability through the successful organisation of the Winter Olympic Games, will once again embrace the entire sport community while activating its legacy.

“We are working towards our long-term goal of increasing the level, complexity, participation, and diversity of the Convention to benefit all stakeholders and delegates.”

“The SportAccord Convention is a unique opportunity for the sport community to come together for discussion on important issues in the field of sport,” Russian Federation Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko said of the announcement Tuesday. “The Convention has become a platform for the interaction of many sports organisation and federations, where they accept the most important sport decisions.

“The proposal to hold the Convention in Sochi is honoured and very important for Russia, especially after the Winter Olympic Games in 2014. The Olympic Games legacy contributes to the development of Sochi as one of the most important sporting cities in the world, which makes it attractive for holding such significant events as the SportAccord Convention.”

SportAccord Recommendations for Agenda 2020

Though Sochi demonstrated its passion for sport in hosting the Olympic Winter Games, Vizer requested on behalf of SportAccord that non-Olympic Games Candidate Cities be allowed for SportAccord Convention host considerations.

Other points Vizer hoped would be considered for the Olympic Agenda 2020 include International Olympic Committee membership for presidents of sports in the Olympic Programme regardless of age regulations and increased IOC recognition for the International Sport Federations.

Mind, Combat, Urban, and Beach Games

Vizer also said SportAccord would begin a more concentrated focus on the development of its Mind, Combat, Urban, and Beach events to “create benefits” for International Federations, National Federations, and athletes.
