(SFC) Awards to be given at the inaugural Association of National Olympic Committees Gala Awards Dinner were announced Friday following the 64th ANOC Executive Council meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach attended the meeting at IOC Headquarters and gave an update as to the progress of the Olympic Agenda 2020 and the submissions from the Olympic Movement. The nine ANOC Commissions and Working Groups also delivered reports on the latest Olympic Agenda 2020 developments.

“This has been a highly-productive and successful ANOC Executive Council meeting,” ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said. “The ANOC Gala Awards Dinner is a concept that we have been discussing for a while and as chair of the ANOC Events Working Group, it is a project I am particularly passionate about.

“The NOCs and their athletes are at the very core of the Olympic Movement but their hard work and dedication is not always recognised. The ANOC Gala Awards Dinner will be a celebration of all NOCs and a chance to give them the recognition they deserve.

“We are honoured that President Bach attended the meeting and gave us an update on Olympic Agenda 2020. We are united behind Olympic Agenda 2020 and fully support President Bach’s commitment to making the process as collaborative as possible. Through our nine Commissions and Working Groups we are undergoing a similar process of reform and I was delighted to hear during the ANOC Executive Council meeting that they are all making excellent progress ahead of November’s General Assembly.”

Award categories for the inaugural ANOC Gala Awards Dinner include four best athletes from the London 2012 Olympic Summer Games awards, four best athletes from the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games awards, coach of the year, most successful National Olympic Committee in 2012 and 2014, best breakthrough National Olympic Committee, and an ANOC Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award.

ANOC Secretary General and IOC Executive Board Member, Gunilla Lindberg, explained how the recipients would be chosen, “We decided to compose a jury composed of one representative from each of the continents, one from the ANOC PR company which is JTA, then three media journalists, one representative from the summer IFS, one representative from the winter Ifs, and the chairperson of the ANOC Athletes Commission.”

“Olympic Agenda 2020 is making progress,” Bach said in Lausanne. “There is a broad consensus for change among all the stakeholders, including the NOCs, the IFs, and IOC members. All the stakeholders have understood that we need to make some major changes to address new challenges. We have to adapt, and it is always better to lead the change ourselves.”

Inaugural Beach Games

The Sheikh also confirmed that the final choice for the first World Beach Games in 2015 would be announced in Bangkok in November at the General Assembly. There are a number of locations and dates to be studied and that the final vote would be made by the NOCs.
