(SFC) The World Archery federation hosted an innovative promotion for their sport by staging “try-archery” experiences at the garden party at the International Olympic Committee’s annual Olympic Day fiesta.

The Chateau de Vidy lawns were filled with over 500 visitors who had the opportunity to grab a bow and arrow and test their skills at taking aim.

“We need people and particularly young people to get active,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “We need to get couch potatoes off the coach.”

Bach unveiled a commemorative statue of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics together with Sochi 2014 half-pipe champion Iouri Podiadtchikov.

“Having archery at the IOC headquarters is an honour for us – but it is even more satisfying to be included in the Olympic Day celebrations programme,” said World Archery Events Director and Barcelona ’92 champion, Juan Carlos Holgado. “Not only does the IOC encourage people around the world to try sport, but it brings sport to its doorstep and leads by example.

“Archery is proud to have supported the Olympic values and contributed to the Olympic Family’s enjoyment of its celebrations for Olympic Day 2014.”

Archery has been very proactive this week and this event marked the second time that the sport was made available on the Olympic lawn as it was also set up for testing for the Youth Olympic Games staff as they prepare for Nanjing 2014.

Last week was very busy at the IOC headquarters as many IOC members and experts were in town for the Olympic Agenda 2020 working group meetings, and consequently many had the opportunity to try their talents at archery.
