(SFC) More than 550 universities from Japan prefectures partnered with Tokyo 2020 at Waseda University Monday, Olympic Day, to raise awareness for the Olympic and Paralympic Games as Japan readies for its first Olympic Summer Games since 1964.

Tokyo 2020 and the universities, like Waseda University, Tokyo University, and Sophia University, will combine their resources to provide Olympic education to Japanese students and the general public to promote the Olympic Values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect and the Paralympic Values of Courage, Determination, Inspiration, and Equality.

Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori and multiple university representatives took part in the signing ceremony, while Olympian Anna Doi, Paralympian Fukutaro Yamasaki, Lausanne’s International Academy of Sports Science and Technology President Jan-Anders Manson and AISTS Executive Director Claude Stricker were among those in attendance at the university in Tokyo.

“I am looking forward to lots of new initiatives from the universities, and I believe that these will also serve as a wonderful legacy of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Mori said.

“The universities and the organising committee will pool their collective resources and proactively undertake a variety of issues including promotion of Olympic education, and the development of global human resources. I would like to see students from universities all over Japan utilise their dynamism and vitality and help us to ensure the overwhelming success of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Tokyo 2020 Chief Executive Officer Toshiro Muto hosted a symposium at Waseda University following the signing ceremony with Tokyo 2020 Chief Operating Officer Yukihiko Nunomura and Tokyo 2020 Executive Board member Rie Tanaka among the symposium’s panelists.
