(SFC) Ahead of meetings with the Lillehammer 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and IOC members Gerhard Heiberg and Angela Ruggiero met with His Majesty the King of Norway Harald V at the Royal Castle in Oslo, Norway, Monday.

Oslo is also bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games competing against Almaty, Beijing, Krakow, and Lviv.

The King and Bach discussed Norway’s performances at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the Olympic Agenda 2020, and the second edition of the Youth Olympic Games, to be held in the King’s country from 12 to 21 February 2016. Ruggiero is with the IOC delegation as Lillehammer 2016 IOC Coordination Commission chair, as well.

“We discussed the Lillehammer Youth Olympic Games, which will use only pre-existing venues, and the legacy these Games will bring to the region and the country,” Bach said. “We also discussed the Culture and Education Programme, which is an integral part of the Games and helps to develop the Olympic values in all the participants.”

Bach saw firsthand preparations for the Youth Olympic Games at ‘Olympiatoppen,’ the Norwegian Olympic Committee’s high performance sport centre, where the country’s athletes train.

Bach, Heiberg, and Ruggiero will visit the venues for Lillehammer 2016, which include infrastructure from the Lillehammer 1998 Olympic Winter Games, preserving the legacy left behind from the last Olympic Games to be held in Norway. An IOC subsidy of EUR 13.5 million was given to the NOC for the construction of the Youth Olympic Village, which Bach’s delegation will also visit, as well as travel and accommodation needs for athletes and officials in the Youth Olympic Village during the Games.
