(SFC) PwC, a group of firms in 158 countries committed to delivering assurance, tax, and advisory services, presented its Thought Leadership publication, entitled “It’s How You Play the Game: Matching a Region’s Priorities with the Right Mega – Or Not So Mega – Event,” at SportAccord Convention 2014 in Belek/Antalya, Turkey.

The publication details how hosting sport events contributes to the development of the site’s region and city. It was presented after the City to City Breakfast at the Susesi Convention Centre.

PwC Cities and Local Government Sector Leader Hazem Galal and PwC Asia Pacific Head of PPP and Infrastructure Yumiko Noda led the presentation in the special break-out session at SportAccord Convention. Both led a separate discussion on the role of sports in regional and city development with Los Angeles Sport Council’s David Simon, London & Partners’ Iain Edmondson, and Auckland Tourism Events & Economic Development’s Rakel Liew.

“The appeal of marquee sports events such as the Olympic Games and football’s FIFA World Cup is undeniable, with cities the world over compete to host these high-profile events, undeterred by the substantial costs, extensive planning and inflexible timelines,” Galal said. “However, not every city or region is ready or able to host a marquee mega-event.

“Some may not have the resources, the infrastructure, or the capacity. Instead, cities and regions are better served by assessing their long-term priorities for development and then bidding on the events that beset correlate with those priorities.”

The PwC publication answers questions based on overall readiness, venues, legacy, supporting infrastructure, and intellectual capital for cities or regions interested in hosting a large sporting event. Five separate case studies on the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Brazil, the 2014 Super Bowl in New York/New Jersey, the 2013 Universiade in Kazan, the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco, and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic in London were shown in the publication.
