(SFC) Municipal Olympic Company President Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, head of the company preparing Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, has stepped down from the post two years from the start of South America’s first Olympic Games, city officials said.

A high-ranking business executive with experience running a major Brazilian steelmaker, Marques will officially resign next month. International Olympic Committee officials and Rio organisers are currently arguing over the delayed preparations for the Games from venues under construction to the Games’ budget.

The IOC said is was “crucial” Rio settle a budget and clarify government agencies’ roles during a visit to the city last week.

The latest deadline to be missed by local organisers was that of the budget, which was expected to be announced by the end of March.

After her departure, Marques will act as an informal advisor to Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes.
