(SFC) Amidst an investigation of a $480,000 loan before his election, Tokyo Governor Naoki Inose resigned Wednesday in an effort to save the negative impact on Tokyo 2020 preparations.

Inose borrowed 50 million yen from the Tokushukai Group last December, but claimed he returned the money in September after a probe of the organisation began. Inose was legally bound to report any funds received as part of campaign contributions.

Inose was told by ex-Tokushukai chairman Torao Tokuda the organisation wanted to acquire a hospital owned by Tokyo Electric Power.

“I don’t want to further interrupt the operations of the administration,” Inose said. “There is no way other than resigning.”

Inose was instrumental in Tokyo’s successful Olympic bid campaign. The International Olympic Committee awarded the Japanese city the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games instead of Madrid and Istanbul this September.

“Mr. Inose has been a fervent and enthusiast supporter of Tokyo’s bid to host the Games, and I would like to thank him for his tireless efforts and contribution to Tokyo’s successful bid campaign,” Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said in a statement.

“The Japanese Olympic Committee will continue working closely together with senior officials from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the national government towards preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tokyo 2020’s immediate focus remains firmly on finalizing the establishment of the Organising Committee to ensure the successful delivery of the Games.”
