(SFC) Canadian gold medalist Carol Huynh was elected chair of the Athletes’ Commission by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles Monday and will represent wrestlers on the FILA Bureau. As part of FILA’s promise when wrestling was chosen to remain on the Olympic Programme at the 125th International Olympic Committee Session 8 Sept., Huynh’s election follows the direction of more women in high positions in the organisation.

Of Chinese descent, Huynh was born in British Columbia and won her gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing – Canada’s second medal in the women’s wrestling discipline. She won bronze at London 2012 in the women’s 48-kilogram freestyle competition. At the FILA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, 20 Sept., Hyunh was inducted into the FILA Hall of Fame.

Huynh was also among the FILA delegation at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires and spoke in front of the IOC Executive Board in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Huynh is joined by Maria Prevolaraki of Greece, Jake Herbert of the United States, Kaori Icho of Japan, Christophe Guenot of France, Hamid Soryan Reihanpour of Iran, and Tomas Lorincz of Hungary on the FILA Athletes’ Commission. The other female members of the 26-member FILA Bureau are Rodica Yaksi of Turkey and Natalia Yariguina of Russia.

“Carol has been in the sport a short time but has been a part of our history,” FILA President Nenad Lalovic said. “She helped our sport at a critical time to recapture our Olympic spot. And now she’s part of the first Athletes’ Commission in our sport’s history and will represent our athletes from around the world in the FILA Bureau. We couldn’t be prouder.”
