(SFC) Tokyo was selected as Host City for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Saturday at the 125th International Olympic Committee Session in Buenos Aires, at the expense of Istanbul and Madrid.
Istanbul 2020, the fifth bid for the Games by the Turkish city, finished second in voting by the IOC members.
“We extend our warmest congratulations to Tokyo for winning the right to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Istanbul 2020 Chairman Hasan Arat said. “They ran an excellent campaign and they had enough quality to win a close race. I have no doubt that they will stage an outstanding Games in 2020.
“We are of course extremely disappointed not to have been selected but we are grateful to the IOC for giving us this opportunity to bid for the Games. It has been a fantastic learning experience for Turkey and our commitment to the Olympic Movement is as strong as it has ever been. We will remain the loyal partner and passionate supporter we have been for over 100 years.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Turkey for their support. I cannot tell you what a source of strength it was knowing that there were millions of people back home cheering for us. I also want to express my thanks to all the Istanbul 2020 team for all their dedication and hard work over the last two years.
“We may not have won the Games, but we united the nation. And for that, we can always be proud.”
