(SFC) Japanese robot MIRATA made an appearance at a Tokyo 2020 press conference Wednesday as the Bid Committee shared its view of Asia offering the greatest opportunity for Olympism to be promoted around the world.

With a total of $932 million in sponsorship revenue expected for Tokyo, Tokyo 2020 hopes hosting the Games in the world’s largest and youngest continent will give the International Olympic Committee no other choice than to award Tokyo the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games Saturday at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires.

“With guaranteed delivery and funding, our focus will be on the ‘extras’ which help promote Olympism worldwide,” Tokyo 2020 and Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said. “The Olympic Movement has taken great strides to inspire the youth of the world . . . to help them discover the incredible power of sport in this challenging and fast-changing era for sport. Tokyo is extremely well-positioned to continue that focus.”

Japan recently reported it lowest rate of unemployment since October 2008 with a 3.8% rate in July of this year. Tokyo’s GDP is the largest of any city in the world, boosted by the strength of the economy, which Takeda attributes to the low unemployment rate.

“[The Olympic Movement will benefit with Tokyo as host] because Asia is the only continent in the world with more people living within its territory than outside,” Japan Sports Association President and Toyota Motor Corporation Honorary Chairman Fujio Cho said. “And consequently it is the largest market in the world, with billions of passionate sports fans.”

“Whether it’s in our daily lives, or to teach us the joy of sports, robots will play an important role in the future,” Japanese fencing Olympian Yuki Ota said after performing exercises with MIRATA.

KIROBO, MIRATA’s 34-centimetre identical “brother” robot, was recently sent to the International Space Station from Tanegashima, Japan, 4 August. Now in Buenos Aires, this is the first time MIRATA has travelled outside of Japan.

Tokyo is bidding against Madrid and Istanbul to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will select the Host City at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires 7 September.
