(SFC) Tokyo 2020 will have another backer for their bid as reported in Yomiuri Shimbun. Princess Hisako of Takamado will be at the International Olympic Committee’s general meeting that will be held on Saturday, where the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic host city will be chosen.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, Princess Hisako will voice her appreciation for the IOC’s support with the Great East Japan Earthquake reconstruction endeavors. Though, in mid-August, a report to the Cabinet and the agency’s announcement, stated Princess Hisako would not attend the meeting, but instead voice her gratefulness during meetings with IOC members.

During that time, the grand steward of the agency, Noriyuki Kazaoka stated, “It is not favorable that an Imperial family member takes a part in the bid activities, and [Princess Hisako] cannot participate in the general meeting in order to draw a line.”

Nevertheless, on August 26 Hakubun Shimomura, the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister called for the princess to attend the IOC’s general meeting and make a speech, Kazaoka conferred. Also, Kazuhiro Sugit the Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary made related request.

The requests were taken under consideration by the agency, and they ultimately consented to them, with a condition. Princess Hisako would be the opening speech for Japan, in their allotted time, and there would be no call for votes to make sure it was clear that her speech was not a part of the final presentation.

Kazaoka stated to reporters on Monday, “Because there is concern that attending the general meeting could be considered an effort to win votes, it was a tough decision to make.”

He went on to say that after the decision, he reported to the Emperor and Empress and that they seemed concerned.

Princess Hisako will be joined by another Imperial family member, Princess Akiko of Mikasa. She will meet IOC members on Friday at a hotel in the city.
