(SFC) HRH Prince Felipe of Asturias is in Buenos Aires with the Madrid 2020 Bid delegation as it prepares for the final phase of its bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games this week.

“I’m not just delighted, I’m thrilled to be forming part of this project and part of a very well drilled, solid and professional team with boundless enthusiasm,” HRH Prince Felipe said. “We’re heading into the last stage now, the bid’s grand finale. There are always things that need to be done, but we can be confident that the team have done the work they had to.

“The main strength of the bid is that virtually everything is in place, with 80 percent of the infrastructures already available. That means there’s less of an effort that needs to be made. The level of popular support is also very high. Madrid is one of the few European capitals that does not have the honour of being an Olympic city, and there is no question that is an important point for the people of Madrid.

“The Olympic Games represent a wonderful opportunity for any city and Madrid is now faced with a magnificent opportunity both for itself and for Spain, which needs the kind of boost that the Games can provide. We are hopeful that Madrid can make this bid a successful one and we are very excited, too.”

The Madrid 2020 Bid team will go through four full days of rehearsals and meetings preparing for the International Olympic Committee’s choice as to which of the three Candidate Cities will host the 2020 Games at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires this weekend.

“Though there are still things to do, we must be confident,” HRH Prince Felipe said. “We need to finish the job off, keep on talking to the IOC members, highlight all the good things Madrid has to offer and also bear in mind the need to keep working hard until the very last second. The presentation is a very important and valuable part of the process: it is the finish line and we need to keep giving everything we have right up to the last metre.

“The Olympic Games are a great opportunity, the biggest global showcase there is, and would represent a tremendous boost at a time at which Spain is badly in need of one. Madrid deserves it, for all the effort it has put in, for its perseverance and for its commitment, which is not just for one bid but looks to the future and the long term, as well.”

Madrid is bidding against Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will select the Host City Saturday, 7 September, at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires.
