(SFC) Argentinean football star Lionel Messi became the latest in a growing list of international athletes to support the Madrid 2020 Bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games Tuesday.

“I think Madrid’s bid offers many great possibilities for the city and demonstrates Spain’s passion for all sports,” Messi said upon landing in Buenos Aires Tuesday.

“I think it is good for sport if Madrid is awarded the Games – not only for the city, but also for the top-level athletes in Spain. It is very important to host the Olympics in the country where I live. I was very lucky to participate in the Olympics for Argentina and it is an amazing experience for all athletes.”

Messi, who has grown through the FC Barcelona Youth Academy since 2000 into arguably one of the world’s greatest footballers, wore a Madrid 2020 t-shirt and raised the Bid’s flag in Buenos Aires, where the three Candidate Cities of Madrid, Istanbul, and Tokyo will learn of the International Olympic Committee’s choice as to which city will host the Games at the 125th IOC Session.

“Leo Messi never refused to support the Madrid Bid,” Madrid 2020 and Spanish Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco said regarding Messi failing to appear in a promotional video for the Bid. “There was a problem of availability, because he was training when the promotion was shot. It is a great honour for us to have Messi’s personal support especially for what he stands for as a sportsman, for his sport and as a person.”

Messi is in Buenos Aires preparing for his national team’s match against Paraguay next Wednesday. Madrid 2020 also drew support from Argentine Football Association President Julio Grondona.

The International Olympic Committee will select the Host City of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games Saturday, 7 September, at the 125th IOC Session.
