(SFC) Former athlete and flag bearer for the Spanish team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games HRH Prince Felipe of Asturias joined the rest of the Madrid 2020 delegation in Buenos Aires Monday as the Bid Committee finishes its campaign to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.

“The Prince is the leader of the bid,” Madrid 2020 and Spanish Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco said. “He was Spain’s flag bearer at Barcelona 1992 and now he is carrying the flag for the Spain of the future. He has been a sportsman and an Olympic diploma winner and he is knowledgeable and dedicated. He is without question the shining light that will guide the Madrid 2020 Bid and help it stand out from the rest.

“Words cannot express what the Prince has done for the bid and for Spain. In our opinion it is a very great honour that he wishes to share these unforgettable moments with us as just another member of our bid team.”

HRH Prince Felipe said the Madrid 2020 Bid has a “magnificent opportunity,” as well as an opportunity for the Olympic movement as a whole, in hosting the 2020 Summer Games.

The Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo bids are in Buenos Aires to present their final presentations in front of the International Olympic Committee at the 125th IOC Session. The IOC will select the Host City 7 September.
