International stars to lead Madrid 2020 delegation in Buenos Aires

(SFC) Pau Gasol, basketball player and Spanish flag bearer in London 2012, and Teresa Perales, Paralympic swimmer and winner of 22 Olympic medals, will lead the Madrid 2020 Bid delegation at the 125th International Olympic Committee Session in Buenos Aires.

“Spanish athletes are the best ambassadors for our country,” Madrid 2020 Bid President Alejandro Blanco said. “Therefore, we are pleased that there will be a large representation of our sporting past, present and future in Buenos Aires.”

Basketball players Amaya Valdemoro and Felipe Reyes, swimmer Mireia Belmonte, synchronised swimmer Ona Carbonell, water polo player Jennifer Pareja, horse rider Cavetano Martinez de Irujo, fencer Jose Luis Abajo Pirri, track cyclist Joan Llaneras, athletes Fermin Cacho and Carlota Castrejana, skier Maria Jose Rienda, and skeleton rider Ander Mirambell will accompany Gasol and Perales in Buenos Aires.

The athletes will also be joined by flag bearers of the “20/20” programme: Joel Gonzales Bonilla, taekwondo gold medallist in London 2012, triple jumper Ana Peleteiro, horse rider Natalia Golding, Paralympic tennis player Daniel Caverzaschi, and rugby player Patricia Garcia.

Madrid is currently bidding against Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Parlaympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will select the Host City at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires 7 September.
