(SFC) Istanbul 2020 Bid Sponsor Turkish Airlines announced it would be adding Nepal as the 108th country in the airline’s flight network.

Turkish Airlines’ direct flight from Istanbul to Kathmandu will launch sometime in the next two weeks. The Bid Sponsor offers flights to Istanbul from more than half of the 204 nations who competed at London 2012. Members of the Olympic Family in countries not served directly by Turkish Airlines can travel on one of 120 other airlines flying into Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport.

“Istanbul’s location at the crossroads of three continents maximises connectivity for the Olympic Family,” Istanbul 2020 Chief Executive Officer Ali Kiremitcioglu said. “It is excellent to see that Turkish Airlines is continuing to add to its extensive flight network. Istanbul is the fifth most visited city in the world, with 12 million visitors visiting annually, so it is important that we as a city are globally accessible in order to meet the international demand. If we are awarded the honour of hosting the Games in 2020, we will welcome hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world and the majority of these visitors will be able to fly directly from their home country to Istanbul.

“Istanbul 2020 is perfectly aligned with the city’s long-term development plan. Istanbul’s major investments in transport infrastructure will improve the experience in travelling to and around the city for visitors and residents. With projects like a third international airport and a new Bosphorus Bridge scheduled for completion well in advance of 2020, there is no doubt that Istanbul will be able to manage extra Olympic traffic comfortably.”

Turkish Airlines is the second biggest airline, flying to more than 230 international destinations, with a network size ranking it the fourth largest in the world. The airline also won Skytrax’s 2013 “Best Airline in Europe” award for the third consecutive year. Turkish Airlines expects to increase its fleet size from 232 aircraft to 415 by 2020 and will carry 100 million passengers per year to more than 300 destinations in 116 countries worldwide.

Istanbul 2020 sponsors, including Turkish Airlines, have given the Bid its largest private-sector investment in any sports bid in Turkish history. Turkish Airlines has also sponsored major sporting events and premier sports brands like Euroleague Basketball and Borussia Dortmund. Lionel Messi, Kobe Bryant and Caroline Wozniacki are Turkish Airlines brand ambassadors.

Istanbul is currently bidding against Madrid and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will select the Host City at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires Saturday, 7 September.
