(SFC) Clara Basiana, Paula Klamburg, Alba Cabello and Maritxell Mas celebrated with Madrid 2020 Bid and Spanish Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona Monday after the athletes’ medal wins for the Spanish national synchronised swimming team.

The swimmers were joined by the coaching staff at the Madrid 2020 stand at Palau Sant Jordi, which hosted 8,783 fans Sunday.

“These medals have cemented the international status that our synchronised swimming team already enjoys,” Blanco said. “Your youthfulness, tenacity and excitement are vital to our Olympic dream. The quality you have shown is a guarantee of the future success of Spanish synchronised swimming, success that we also hope to celebrate in Madrid at the 2020 Games.

“It makes me very happy to see the stands full of people cheering on our swimmers.”

Seven of Spain’s eight medals at the FINA World Championships have been won by the synchronised swimming team, while Melanie Costa won silver in the women’s 400-metre freestyle. The synchro girls won silver in the team technical routine, team free, and team combination, and bronze in the duet free and duet technical routine and the solo technical and solo free.

Madrid is bidding against Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will choose the Host City of the 2020 Games at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires 7 September.
