(SFC) The Competition Schedule for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi has been released, with the Games being held from 7-23 February 2014.

The Games will happen during 17 days with 98 medals being awarded in seven Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes and team members from 85 countries around the world will compete in the Olympic Games. The number of competitions and new events at the Sochi Games has set an Olympic record.

Twelve events were added to the Sochi Olympic Games Sports Programme, bringing the total to 98. Twenty-nine events will be held in the Coastal Cluster and 69 will be held in the Mountain cluster – 12 more than at the Vancouver 2010 Games and 14 more than at the Turin 2006 Games. Skiing makes up nine of the 12 new events, including the first-ever women’s ski jumping event.

Eight freestyle skiing and snowboarding events have been added, including ski halfpipe, ski slopestyle, snowboard style and snowboard parallel slalom. Team events have been added in figure skating, bobsleigh (relay) and biathlon (mixed relay).

The International Sports Federations, the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Broadcasting Service have approved the Olympic Competition Schedule, but it may still undergo minor alterations.

The full schedule can be found on the Winter Games’ official website: www.sochi2014.com.
