(SFC) Two of Turkish domestic football’s biggest stars, Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Eboué of Galatasaray, have backed Istanbul in its bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.

Cote d’Ivoire’s leading goal-scorer, Drogba joined Galatasary in January after a lengthy career with Chelsea Football Club in England’s Premier League and a brief stint with Shanghai Shenhua Football Club of the Chinese Super League. He set up The Didier Drogba Foundation in 2007 to support health and education of African people.

Eboué joined Galatasaray from Arsenal Football Club of the English Premier League in 2011 and has won two Super Lig titles, including the 2013 championship with Drogba.

A 14-person delegation from Istanbul 2020 is currently in the Ivory Coast’s capital of Abidjan for the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa General Assembly to build on Turkey’s relationship with Africa.

“I am very pleased that such an experienced delegation from Istanbul 2020 are travelling to my home country, Ivory Coast, for the ANOCA General Assembly,” Drogba said. “Turkey has an excellent sporting culture where the athlete comes first and I hope Istanbul 2020 members can share their deep knowledge with African sports organisers. Istanbul would be an ideal host for the 2020 Olympics – it just has that magic that athletes love.”

“Between 2005 and 2011 I was playing for Arsenal in England and I felt London’s enthusiasm towards 2012 grow year-on-year,” Eboué said. “Istanbul already feels like it has that buzz. There are always sporting events going on and you can’t underestimate the power an inspirational backdrop gives to sportsmen and women. It pushes you to achieve greater heights on the field and the passion of Turkish fans means the athletes experience is first class.”

Istanbul is bidding against Madrid and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will announce the Host City at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires 7 September.
