(SFC) International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge was presented with the Association of National Olympic Committees Merit Award at the ANOC Extraordinary General Assembly in Lausanne Saturday.

Association of National Olympic Committees President HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah – the first sports dignitary to be awarded the Merit Award twice - presented the award to Rogge.

“He has done a great job for the Olympic Movement and has always helped us to promote our activities,” Sheikh Ahmad said. “We would like to say thank you President Jacques for the efforts and hard work and for creating the Youth Olympic Games.”

Sheikh Ahmad became ANOC President in April 2012 and Rogge wished him success in his “creative and ambitious plans,” including the new ANOC headquarters in Lausanne, the new constitution, the modernization and vision of ANOC and the Olympic Solidarity activities.

The Extraordinary General Assembly was attended by representatives of 2012 of the 204 National Olympic Committees, and Sheikh Ahmad was pleased with the progression at ANOC since the 18th General Assembly in Moscow, Russia, last April.

“This meeting will give us a roadmap for the future because this is only the beginning,” he said. “We are moving in the right direction and we are helping each other.”

The ANOC EGA also saw the approval of the amendments to the ANOC statutes, with the aim to serve, promote and protect the interests of the National Olympic Committees and based on accountability, transparency, equality and recognition of athletes, including the establishment of an Athletes’ Commission.
