(SFC) The Tokyo 2020 bid team was in attendance this week at the International Forum on Sport for Peace and Development and highlighted Japan’s substantial contribution to the world sport movement by reaching out to over 90 countries with aid.

H.E.Masuo Nishibayashi, Ambassador in Charge of Cultural Exchange, illustrated Japan’s long years of involvement and contribution to the Olympic Movement and how the country has provided sports equipment and helped maintain stadiums in over 90 countries. Not only, Japan has dispatched over 3,100 teachers and coaches to approximately 80 plus countries to help foster new leaders.

One example in particular that he highlightd was Zambia, where Japan has stepped in to send aid to the Olympic youth development centre in its capital city of Lusaka.

Bid chief and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Tsunekazu Takeda said in a statement about the team’s participation at the IOC event:

“I extend sincere congratulations to the United Nations' Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the successful organisation of the 3rd International Forum on Sport for Peace and Development, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to join this special meeting. The Forum is an evidence of the UN and IOC’s cooperative effort to further strengthening the values of the Olympic Movement.

“Both IOC President Jacque Rogge and UN Secretary General Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the critical role of sport in inspiring the youth generation, and its unique and indispensable link between peace and development throughout the world. Tokyo 2020 is also committed to promoting the power of sport and its hugely beneficial effect on society. Through this Forum, I was again convinced of the invaluable contributions athletes make to society.

“The Olympic Values of Friendship and Respect are the first steps that can lead to peace, and the Olympic Value of Excellence contributes to development. Tokyo 2020 aims to reinforce these key values, which the Japanese people truly share, to help keep Olympism at the heart of our rapidly changing world. Moreover, it will further promote the Olympic Movement to deliver lasting benefits for Japan and the entire world.”

Three cities are bidding to host the 2020  summer Olympics: Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo. The IOC will choose their host city at the 125th session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
