(SFC) Sochi 2014 celebrated World Environment Day Wednesday, 5 June, with the announcement of the winners of a high school multimedia contest in Adler, Sochi.

The Organising Committee will also conduct awareness campaigns on the cleaning and beautification of natural sites across Russia to help better the environment.

Students participated in the “Respect is won by doing something” competition, jointly put on by the Sochi Department of Education and Science, to encourage people to develop a responsible attitude towards the environment.

Students entered the competition in the topics of “Green Standards” (a story about Olympic venues that fulfill world and Russian environmental standards), “Green Action” (a report on matters connected to the amenities in the grounds), “Flora and Fauna of the Host City” (a story about rare flora and fauna in the Sochi region), “Protected Nook” (a report on protected natural areas), “Before and After,” “What has changed?” (the venues and areas of Sochi before the 2007 victory in Guatemala and today), and the “Little Page of Good Deeds” (a story of host cities that contributed to nature preservation).

A cleanup campaign at the reserve of the natural ornithological park in the Imeretinskaya Valley was also started on World Environment Day, with the “Natural Ornithological Park in the Imeretinskaya Valley” and Sochi 2014 Organising Committee organising it. It is also supported by the Coca-Cola Company, a World Partner of the International Olympic Committee, and the Sochi Volunteer Development Centre. Flowers were also planted at the Caucasus reserve.

Students from the Sochi Environmental Biological Centre also had a celebration to mark the closing of the “March in the Parks 2013” festival, which brought awareness to the protection of natural reserves. “World of Wilderness,” a children’s drawing contest dedicated to nature and to the inhabitants of the reserve, was organised by representatives from the federally-funded “Caucasian State Nature Biosphere Reserve.”
