(SFC) The Istanbul bid to host the 2020 summer Games is set to take off for the St Petersburg SportAccord Convention led by Hasan Arat and supported by a senior delegation.

Actually the two cities share a sister city alliance boding well for the Istanbul bid for the Games.

The Istanbul team will include Youth and Sports Minister, Suat Kılıç; Istanbul 2020 Chairman, Hasan Arat; President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, Professor Uğur Erdener; Istanbul 2020 CEO, Ali Kiremitçioğlu; Istanbul 2020 Sports Director, Alp Berker; Olympian and volleyball star, Neslihan Darnel; plus representatives of the seven Istanbul 2020 sponsors who have put forth the largest private sector investment of any Turkish bid in history.

Bid leader Arat said, “The seniority of our delegation here demonstrates that Istanbul 2020 is a national priority for Turkey. For 20 years, hosting the Games has been one of our nation’s deepest ambitions.

“Since our last bid we have proven ourselves to be trusted and effective hosts. In that time we have held over 40 major events, including 12 international sport events in 2012. But our learning process is on-going and SportAccord is a crucial step in our development. We are determined to offer the Olympic Family the perfect partnership; this event is a great chance to enhance our understanding of the priorities and needs of the IFs in particular.

“St. Petersburg is one of Istanbul’s Sister Cities, and it has 342 bridges. So what better place to share our message of unity with the Olympic Family: Bridge Together.”

The Istanbul bid promises that the athletes will have access from the Olympic Village to a state-of-the-art Training Precinct and a free-to-use Athlete Recovery Centre to minimise pre-competition travel.

IOC member and head of the NOC of Turkey, Uğur Erdener, noted,“All athletes at Istanbul 2020 will have the world-class facilities they need in order to focus completely on their performance. On top of this, our inspirational sports presentation will drive them to new heights. I am confident Istanbul 2020 will create the unforgettable moments of sport history that captivate audiences worldwide.

“As the first ever Games in Turkey or the region, and the first to be held across two continents simultaneously, Istanbul 2020 represents an unrivalled opportunity for IFs to bridge to new audiences in fresh markets.”

In fact Istanbul holds a serious card for its growing tourism industry. Recently even iconic actor Russell Crowe was in the city and Tweeted:

Istanbul is perhaps the most intriguing city on this planet...I think this is the beginning of a love affair.

Istanbul is running against Madrid and Tokyo to host the 2020 summer Games and the IOC will make their final decision on September 7 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
