(SFC) In its 10th year, the Carrera de la Mujer Central Lechera Asturiana – DKV race attracted 23,000 women to Madrid for the largest women’s sporting event in Europe Sunday.

The race – held in support of the fight against breast cancer and domestic violence – began and ended in the Parque del Oeste. The seven-kilometre route traveled through the calle Princesa, the Gran Via, calle Alcala, the Puerta del Sol and the Palacio de Oriente.

The 23,000 participants took 15 minutes to cross the starting line, while Elena Garcia Grimau won the race with a time of 23 minutes and 17 seconds. Triathlete Ana Burgos finished 16 seconds behind Grimau for second place and Yesenia Centeno rounded out the podium with a race time of 23:48. Beatriz Estaban, Sonia Ruiz and Tamara Sanfabio finished in the top six, respectively.

Awards were given in a number of categories, including companies, sister, grandmother-mother-granddaughter, and age groups 12 and older. Many participants also signed up to volunteer for the Madrid 2020 Bid after the race.

Madrid is bidding against Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will announce its final decision in Buenos Aires this September.
