(SFC) – International Rugby Board President Bernard Lapasset will run for the presidency of SportAccord, which is the umbrella organization for Olympic and non-Olympic federations and organizers of international sporting events, to be elected at the 2013 General Assembly in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

“SportAccord is a key organization for the development and promotion of sport, its values and benefits and I am honoured to stand for this critical role,” Lapasset said. “It is an exciting time for SportAccord with many opportunities to reinforce and enhance the service it provides its members and to work in partnership with them to develop and grow sport, addressing the challenges it faces and promoting its positive role in society.

“It is important that SportAccord is at the heart of the global sporting community. It must reinforce the unity of the international sporting family whilst recognizing the diversity of the SportAccord members.”

Lapasset previously held the position of French Rugby Federation president for 17 years, while also serving as president of the Rugby World Cup 2007 Organizing Committee. He also worked with the French National Olympic Committee before his time with the IRB, which began in 2008.
