(SFC) Madrid 2020 has selected 12 business start-up projects out of 150 applicants as part of its 2020: Startup Madrid programme. The programme will provide backing for 2,020 entrepreneurs as the Games draw near. Twenty-nine entrepreneurs involved in the 13 projects will receive intensive practical training.

“There was a lot of competition among the 150 projects and the quality was very high, which meant there wasn’t much difference at all in the final scores,” Programme Director Raul del Pozo said.

The business start-ups will implement projects in different areas and develop business models through web platforms and applications for mobiles to create synergies in many different senses.

Top Around (tourism), Camare.ro (restaurants and catering), Samsamia (fashion), Apparcar (mobility) and QhacesHoy (ticketing) are the five app-based startups, while Cursopedia.com (education), Recomendar.com (social networks), 3dPrintMedl (crowdsourcing), DasMenos (group buying), Weneru (energy), Pathfinder (entrepreneurs) and Zitasport (sport) represent the seven web-based projects.

Most of the projects are based near Madrid, with 24 men and five women representing the projects. Five entrepreneurs from outside of Spain will add potential and an international dimension to the projects.

“Numerous participants set out on this journey but only a few made it through to the final stage,” Madrid 2020 and Spanish Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco said. “But unlike sport, in which there can only be one definite winner, here there are 12.

“Without idealism, you can’t have optimism or sense of the future or a vision of the future. Your ideal is to imagine a project and see it through to fruition not just as a career path but as a way of life.”
