(SFC) – The International Olympic Committee Evaluation Commission witnessed a presentation from the Medellin 2018 Bid Committee today regarding its Youth Olympic Games Plan, an integral step in the bid process to host the Games in 2018.

Medellin’s presentation highlighted answered the IOC Evaluation Commission’s questions and highlighted the technical aspects of their bid plan.

“Today was another great day for the Medellin dream to bring the Youth Olympic Games to Columbia in 2018,” Medellin 2018 Bid Leader and IOC member Andres Botero Phillipsbourne said. “We were able to show the unique attributes of our bid plan to the IOC Evaluation Commission, who clearly have worked hard to understand our proposal, and we highlighted our modern venues and the natural of Medellin. Most people don’t know that we have a warm climate throughout the entire year and perfect weather conditions to host sport events.”

The Medellin bid team presented the Games Plan to the IOC Evaluation Commission from the Plaza Mayor Convention Centre in Medellin, the proposed site for the Main Media Centre during the Games. The Plaza Mayor is also planned to be a competition venue for sports and culture and educational activities for athletes.

The Plaza Mayor received a visit from Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos yesterday, as well. Santos wished the bid team luck and his continued support in its plans to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2018. President of the House of Representatives for Colombia Augusto Posada Sanchez and Governor of Medellin’s Antioquia Sergio Fajardo joined the country’s president in the Medellin city centre.

“The fact that the President of our country is taking such a personal interest in this bid shows the commitment that we have to bring the Youth Olympic Games here,” Medellin Mayor Anibal Gaviria Correa said. “I believe today we were able to show the IOC our passion behind this bid, and explain how sport has played such an important role in the social transformation that our city has experienced these past 15 year. It is time for people to understand what a beautiful and safe place Medellin is, and what a perfect location it will be to host the Youth Olympic Games.”

“Since I have grown up in Medellin, I know how much sport means to this city,” Mariana Pajon, London 2012 BMX gold medallist and official bid ambassador, said. “We have built incredible venues that will be perfect for the Youth Olympic Games. The athletes who will come for the Games will have the best experience they have ever had in their young sporting careers. The entire city will support this event and it will be a fun atmosphere that the athletes will remember for the rest of their lives.”

The International Olympic Committee will select the host of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games at an IOC Session in Lausanne, Switzerland, in July.
