February 1 – The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee announced a closing date for volunteer registration for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games of 1 March 2013 – exactly than one month from today. A clock counting down to the date is on the Games’ website:

Anyone can write their name into Olympic history by becoming a volunteer at the first every Olympic Winter Games in Russia by filling out an application. Over 160,000 applications have already been sent to the Organizing Committee, and more than 80% of volunteers for the 2014 Games have been selected so far.

At Test Events organized with support of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, 5,000 volunteers will gain work experience during the 2012-13 season. Volunteers will get through more than 50,000 shifts and will be among the first to see the Olympic slopes and stadiums. The volunteers will also acquire unique experiences in conditions similar to those to be experienced during the Games. They will then pass on the knowledge they obtain “in the field” at the 26 Volunteer Centers around the country.

An estimated 25,000 volunteers will be involved during the Games in Sochi in more than 20 areas of activity. In total, volunteers will account for more than 30% of total staff numbers at the Games.
