21 January – Hassan Moustafa, president of the International Handball Federation (IHF), has commended the Spanish organisers of the Men’s World Championship in Madrid, one of the six host cities during the competition.
“The organisation has been excellent,” Moustafa said. “All our requirements were met and the atmosphere has been incredible.
“That’s not just my opinion. I can also speak for the players, the referees, and the support staff. We are delighted to be in Spain and especially here in Madrid.”
Granollers, Seville, Guadalajara, Zaragoza, and Barcelona also hosted events during the tournament. A last-minute change of venue from Madrid Arena to the Caja Magica was also applauded by Moustafa.
“The decision to change the venue to the Caja Magica was exactly right,” Moustafa continued. “I knew I could trust [President of the Madrid 2020 Olympic Bid Committee and the Spanish Olympic Committee] Alejandro Blanco when he said it would be best.
“I want to express my gratitude for the excellent work done by Alejandro Blanco.”
The Caja Magica, inaugurated in 2009, is a venue used by the Madrid 2020 Olympic blueprint. With a capacity of 12,442, it would host tennis and Paralympic tennis.
The Handball World Championship will end on January 27 at the Pala Sant Jordi in Barcelona.
Madrid is bidding against Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 summer Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote for the final host city on September 7th in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
