January 16 – Madrid Mayor Ana Botella and Madrid 2020 Bid President Alejandro Blanco today presented the Madrid 2020 Candidature File to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at a ceremony at the Moncloa Palace, his official residence in Madrid, and received the PM’s backing of the capital city hosting the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Rajoy asked every Spaniard to support the Madrid 2020 bid as they did for Barcelona’s bid for the 1992 Olympics, and described the project as a “showcase” revealing what the people of Spain are capable of when they unite in a common cause.

“In 1992, we were all Barceloneses,” he said. “And in 2020 Madrid is expecting us all to be Madrileños.

“The Candidature File is the very best example of the excellence that can be achieved by teamwork and faithful cooperation between the various levels of government.”

Rajoy also complimented Madrid’s proven organizational capabilities, the fact that the city has been diligently going about its preparations for many years, and the excitement among its inhabitants at the opportunity to host the Games.

“This is an Olympic Bid by the whole of Spain,” Botella said. “One that goes beyond the city and is a national project – a project for everyone – and based on efficient, simplified, and intelligent management. It has the support of the entire country.”

“The organization and plan for the Madrid games are guaranteed, backed, and promoted by the entire government and the Prime Minister,” Blanco, also head of the Spanish Olympic Committee, said. “We have every faith in the sporting and organizational ability of Spain. We are a benchmark throughout the world thanks to the quality of our sportsmen and women, our coaches, and our federations.

Blanco also explained the project as predictable – a word he wanted to bring to Rajoy’s attention – in that Madrid 2020 could only lead to success.

Istanbul and Tokyo have also submitted bids to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The IOC’s vote will be conducted on September 7, 2013 in Buenos Aires.
