January 7 - Madrid submitted its third candidature bid file on Monday with a new Games’ program outlining a tight budget and high national support for the Olympics.

The official presentation took place after a brief half hour meeting with International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Head of Bid City Relations Jacqueline Barrett and Executive Director of the Olympic Games, Gilbert Felli.

The Madrid 2020 delegation was led by Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, Alejandro Blanco, the president of both of the bid and the Spanish Olympic Committee, together with the President of the Sports Council Miguel Cardenal and Lucia Figar, who also serves as the Councillor for Education, Sports and Youth with the Madrid Regional Government.

Blanco explained the concept of the tight budget is due to the fact that much of the infrastructure is already in place.

And he noted that there was high public support as Spain has an excellent track record for hosting international sports events. He said, “No other city or country in the world has welcomed more high level competitions than us, nor with such success.”

Mayor Botella emphasized that the bid is “a project the whole country is behind and a dream for all Spaniards”.

“The proof can be seen in the fact that three levels of government are represented here - the city, the regional and the national.

“We are here to give our support to the countless people who are working for and believe in Madrid’s Olympic aspirations."

All three of Spain’s IOC members Juan Antonio Samaranch, Marisol Casado, and Jose Perurena were there at the meeting to personally show their support.

Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo are all three competing to host the summer Games but the final winning city will only be revealed on September 7th later this year.
