January 4 - Newly elected South Korean President Geun-hye Park has started off the New Year by setting up a transition committee and naming the head of the PyeongChang 2018 Games, Jin-sun Kim, as her inauguration preparation chairperson.

Kim will be in charge of a special committee that will oversee Park’s inauguration as the new President February 25th when she takes over from incumbent President Myung-bak Lee. Park will serve as the head of state for a five year term seeing her through the staging of the first Korean winter Olympics in PyeongChang during February 9-25 in 2018. She will close the Games on her last effective day in office.

South Korea made history when they elected their first lady President on December 19th a few weeks ago.

The transition committee will oversee nine sub committees comprised of about 24 people each.

Yonhap News agency reported that committee chief Kim Yong-joon explained announcing the new decisions, "This transition committee is aimed at setting the administrative philosophy and draft policy platforms on which direction the new government will move so that the incoming government will be launched smoothly.”

Park is the daughter of former President Park Chung-hee and Moon has served as the chief of staff of former President Roh Moo-hyun.
