December 28 - Japan's new Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has assured the government’s support for the Tokyo 2020 summer Games and Paralympics bid.
A top team of senior bid members paid a visit to meet and discuss the bid plan with Hakubun Shimomura, the newly appointed minister, to update him on the imminent submission of the candidature file and fill him in on all the details.
Leading the meeting was IOC member, Tsunekazu Takeda, who is also president of the bid and Japanese National Olympic Committee (JOC), together with Masato Mizuno, bid CEO and JOC Vice President.
Shimomura emphasized that the campaign for the Games and the advancement of sports in Japan, via the establishment of an Agency for Sports, were high priorities for the government.
"I was elected in Tokyo, so this bid means very much to me,” said Shimomura. ”I plan on attending the Candidature File submission press conference in Tokyo to reiterate the unequivocal support our newly formed national government will continue to provide the bid."
Also last week the city of Tokyo got a new city leader as Naoki Inose was appointed to the position as well as a top place on the bid as chairman.
The Tokyo 2020 bid to host the summer Games has the complete support and cooperation of the Japanese parliament's House of Representatives and the House of Councillors since last December.
Following the support by the government, which is paramount for any bid city, the bid committee then established the Tokyo 2020 Council. The Council is a senior advisory board that gathers together 64 leading personalities from the business and sports worlds, as well as government members, including the Prime Minister who also serves as Supreme Advisor.
For this 2020 Games race Tokyo is running against Istanbul and Madrid. The final decision will be voted by the IOC at the session in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
