November 30 – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) held their biennial Olympic Golden Rings awards in Lausanne to commemorate the outstanding coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games and USA rights holder NBC took home top honors. IOC President, Dr. Jacques Rogge, was there to do the honors and NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel picked up the trophies.
The American rights holder took the prizes for the Best Olympic Programme category for its overview programme “The Games of the XXX Olympiad”, Best On Air Promotion, and Best Olympic Feature with its film “Measure and Motion”. The network nabbed a silver medal for Best Athlete Profile category, for its feature on Kenyan runner David Rudisha who set a new world record in the 800m race.
Zenkel said, “To be recognized for our work among the best Olympic broadcasters in the world is particularly rewarding, and further validation of the tireless efforts and constant innovation of our entire Olympic team.
“These awards are a credit to the creativity, passion and commitment of our staff and to the support provided to us throughout Comcast and NBCUniversal.
"They are also a credit to the compelling stories and extraordinary feats of the Olympic athletes, whom we consider it a privilege to cover.
"We are grateful to the IOC and the international jury for these prestigious honors.”
The awards were created in 1976 and comprise gold, silver and bronze trophies in five categories: Best Olympic Sports Production by Olympic Broadcasting Services, Best On Air Promotion, Best Olympic Feature, Best Athlete Profile and Best Olympic Programme.
IOC Member and Chairman of the Coordination Commission for London 2012, Denis Oswald, led the international jury.
