November 25 - The Madrid 2020 bid committee has come away from the London Games debriefing in on the Paralympic Games with high hopes.

“We are leaving here firm in the belief that our bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, based on our city and its sporting infrastructure, is a very solid one. In harnessing both the know-how shared by London and the IOC’s recommendations, the fully-funded Madrid 2020 Games have the foundations in place to guarantee success,” said Manuel Parga, the Madrid 2020 CFO.

The Paralympic Games always follow the Olympic Games in the same venues and the same city andhave the distinction that they are for physically disabled people. The London Games debriefing was held in Rio de Janeiro.

Mr. Parga said Madrid, which has hosted 77 world sports championships and 85 Europeans sports championships, is well suited to host both Olympic and Paralympic Games. The city has launched a series of educational programs which have already reached many thousands of young Spaniards.

To further bolster its bid to host the 2020 Games, the Madrid committee will also attend an International Olympic Committee World Conference on Sport, Culture and Education in Amsterdam.

International Paralympic Committee President Sir Philip Craven chaired the Paralympic discussions in Rio. He said,“The objective is to explore and discuss the opportunities the London 2012 experiences bring in the future, in order to maintain and build on the momentum of this summer.

“Bid cities for 2020 will have the chance to seek ways to apply these lessons to their own context.”

Madrid is bidding against Istanbul and Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympics. The final choice will be voted by the IOC in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7, 2013.
